Thursday night before the relay: one house near La Pine instead of a scatter of rooms

Most teams drive in Thursday, eat together, pack the vans and leave early Friday for the Diamond Lake start, roughly an hour and a half south and west of the house. Twelve runners and two volunteers in one house means one grocery run, one 12-foot table for the pasta, one driveway to load, and nobody texting room numbers. The two vans and a trailer fit in the parking area with room to spare.

Two smaller teams from the same club can share it as long as the adults stay at 24: two 10-runner teams with four volunteers, say. Count beds first, since four of the 11 rooms are bunk rooms. The bed-by-bed table for all 11 rooms is on large group rentals near Sunriver; the floor plans and 3D tour are on the whole retreat page.

Saturday and Sunday after the finish in Bend: the recovery house on the Deschutes

The finish is Saturday afternoon at Riverbend Park. From there the house is 30 minutes south: a shower in one of six baths, the stacked washer and dryer for 36 legs of singlets, the covered hot tub on the flagstone patio, and 450 feet of cold Deschutes for the legs. The river here is spring-fed and seldom warmer than 60 degrees, which is exactly what a relay team wants on Saturday evening.

Sunday morning is coffee on the dock and a slow drive home, or a float from the dock for the ones who can still move; the put-ins are in floating the Deschutes from Sunriver. Dinner Saturday is the gas grill on the deck or a reservation in Bend; the big tables are in where to eat near Sunriver.

Where a relay team and its drivers sleep in the Lodge and the Cottage

The Lodge has three King rooms, two Queens and a bunk room with two sets of twin bunks, plus a twin bunk in two of the King rooms, across two floors and five baths. The Cottage next door has four Full beds and a Twin bunk with one bath. Put the early-leg runners who want to sleep in the Cottage with its own front door, and the van drivers and volunteers in the Lodge near the kitchen. A futon and a sofa bed by the pool table take the overflow.

Vans, trailers and the dirt road from Sunriver to the house

Parking is for up to 15 vehicles with room for vans and trailers, and a trailer can turn around on site. The last stretch, Chief Paulina Drive, is a shared dirt road: a 12-passenger van is fine at 10 MPH. From the house the Highway 97 ramp at Sunriver is about ten minutes, and from there the course exchanges along 97 and the Cascade Lakes Highway are a known quantity. From the house: Sunriver Resort and SHARC are five miles and about ten minutes, Bend and Mt. Bachelor are each about 30 minutes, and the Big River boat ramp, a public put-in, is 2.5 miles up the road.

The house rules that matter for a relay team near Sunriver

A relay team arriving at 9 PM on Thursday is fine; a team celebrating at 11 PM on Saturday keeps it to the hot tub and the deck, because quiet hours start at 9 and sound carries on the river. The fire pit is closed on relay weekend: no outdoor fires June through September.

The rules that decide whether this house fits a group: the renter must be 30 or older, every booking has a 2-night minimum, quiet hours run 9 PM to 8 AM, and occupancy is capped at 30 guests (24 adults) because the home is on well and septic. Dogs are welcome for a pet fee once approved on your reservation. The full list, the deposit and the cancellation terms are on house rules and Book Now.

What the relay weekend costs for a team of 14 to 30, and how to book

Three nights, Thursday to Sunday, split across a team, is the comparison to make against a block of Bend hotel rooms over the busiest June weekend in town. The live calendar shows the rate for your dates; the relay weekend books early. The other events teams book this house for are on team and event lodging near Bend and Sunriver, and Pole Pedal Paddle has its own page.

Nightly rates run about 1,000 to 4,000 dollars plus taxes and fees. For 24 adults, that is 42 to 167 dollars a person a night before taxes and fees.

What a group said about the river after a long weekend

“Legendary house. Easily the best Airbnb stay I've ever experienced. Bit pricey but once you're there sitting on the river at sunset it makes it all worth it.”
