Where to elope on the Deschutes River near Bend and stay the weekend

The answer is a private stretch of the Deschutes near Sunriver, about 30 minutes from Bend, with the house for the whole weekend. Deschutes Riverfront Retreat has 450 feet of private river frontage on three acres, a dock, and 11 bedrooms that sleep up to 30. Say your vows by the water, just the two of you or your closest few.

Unlike a venue you rent by the hour, you have the whole estate for a few days, so the elopement becomes a weekend. Every booking has a 2-night minimum, and there are no day rentals. A $500 event fee applies for ceremonies, on top of the stay. For a larger gathering, the micro-wedding venue page has the full details and house guidelines.

Why a private stretch of the Deschutes suits an elopement

Privacy is the reason. The house sits at the end of a dead-end private road. There are 80 acres of trees on one side and protected river habitat across the water. It is about as private as Central Oregon gets.

The riverside setting is made for small, nature-forward ceremonies. Exchange vows on three private acres of the Deschutes, then celebrate without rushing in and out of a venue on a clock. You will see wildlife, such as herons on the river, and you can watch for eagles and otters. You may also encounter mosquitoes and other insects; the county works to suppress them. The native landscaping is kept on purpose to support the local habitat.

The estate has three ceremony spots on the Deschutes: the dock, the riverbank, and the deck

Three spots on the estate work for vows: the private dock, the riverbank, and the wrap-around covered deck. All three are steps from the door, so there is no shuttle and no second location.

Ceremonies follow the house rules and strict county fire rules: no candles, no sparklers, and no open flame of any kind on the property. Plan the arch and the aisle with flowers and daylight instead.

Just the two of you, or up to 45 guests on the Sunriver estate

Up to 45 guests are welcome if you want to grow it; for a true elopement it is just your people and the river. The limit of up to 45 guests counts everyone on the property, including children, even if they are not staying overnight. The home is on a well and septic system, so the cap is firm.

The estate sleeps up to 30 across 11 bedrooms, so your wedding party can stay on site for the whole weekend. For a meal outside there are four 8-foot picnic tables, about 16 folding chairs, and some folding tables. One past wedding seated its guests at long tables under the pines.

No large rental items such as dance floors; if in doubt, pre-approve it. There is parking for up to 15 vehicles on site. Camping is not permitted unless approved in advance.

Chefs and photographers through Epicurate, and who can officiate in Oregon

A vendor list is shared through Epicurate for chefs, photographers, and more. The Deschutes County Circuit Court does not perform ceremonies, and the county clerk says couples are responsible for finding their own officiant.

Under Oregon law a marriage may be solemnized by a judicial officer or a county clerk or deputy. A clergyperson authorized by a religious congregation, or a celebrant of a secular organization authorized to solemnize marriages, may also officiate. The county clerk says online ordination counts if it meets Oregon's requirements, including that the ordaining organization is active. At least two witnesses must be present.

Private chefs, mobile massage and photographers are on the same list. If you are a wedding planner, photographer, or similar, we are happy to pay a referral fee.

Seasons and light on the Deschutes

Summer gives the longest light and the firmest fire rules; winter gives snow on the river and short days. In Bend, the longest day of the year, around June 21, has about 15 hours 29 minutes of daylight. The shortest, around December 21, has about 8 hours 52 minutes.

Fires are seasonal. There are no fires June through September; May and October are weather dependent, following strict county fire rules. High-desert evenings cool off, even in summer. The fire pit sits down by the river, ringed with chairs among tall pines.

“This house was perfect for our family get together. With the amount of space indoors and outdoors, everyone could relax and enjoy their stay. My partner and I also had a small wedding ceremony in the backyard and it was perfect. My family kept saying how beautiful the home and location was that they’d want to book another stay in the future. Scott was such a great host from the moment I booked the house (~7 months in advance) until we checked out. His instructions were clear, he always responded in a timely manner, and overall he’s just an awesome host! Thanks again Scott!”
