Large dogs and big groups at the Sunriver house
The property is not fenced. At the end of a private dead-end road there are 80 acres of forest on one side and the river on the other, and the road itself, Chief Paulina Drive, is a shared dirt road with families and pets.
Dogs of any size are welcome, large dogs included, and there is no limit on the number of dogs, so a group can bring more than one. Each dog must be well-behaved. A big group with big dogs follows the same rules as anyone else: each dog is approved on the reservation, pets stay off the furniture and the beds, and no dog is left unattended in the house.
A big group of dogs is not new to the property: it has hosted Mt. Bachelor's avalanche-dog training with 20 dogs.

Room to roam: a dead-end road, 80 acres of trees and 450 feet of the Deschutes
The house sits at the end of a private dead-end road. There are 80 acres of forest on one side and the river on the other. That leaves space for dogs to be dogs. The estate is three acres, with 450 feet of private Deschutes River frontage and protected river habitat across the water.
Morning walks along the water, afternoons on the dock, and evenings by the fire when the season allows. A stone-paved walking path runs among the pines near the river, and a hammock hangs between trees on the riverbank. Chief Paulina Drive is a shared dirt road with families and pets, so please drive slowly.
You will see wildlife, and you may encounter mosquitoes and other insects; a local vector control district works to suppress them. We keep the native landscaping on purpose to support the local habitat. Herons, eagles and otters use this stretch of river, so keep an eye on the dog near the bank.
Dog-friendly trails near Sunriver: the Deschutes River Trail and the Sunriver paths
The Deschutes River Trail is a long walk, and it runs south toward Sunriver from the Benham Falls East trailhead. The Forest Service requires dogs on leash at all trailheads throughout the year. On the Deschutes River Trail itself, leashes are required from May 15 to September 15.
From Bend, Benham Falls East is about 8 miles south on Highway 97 to the Lava Lands Visitor Center exit. From there it is about 4 miles on Forest Road 9702. Two more access points, Aspen Day Use Area and Benham Falls West, sit off the Cascade Lakes Highway on the Bend side. Both carry the same leash rule and the same day fee. An annual pass is thirty dollars, and passes are not sold on site at Aspen.

Dog-friendly patios in Sunriver and Bend
The Sunriver Pub, one of Sunriver Brewing Co.'s two Sunriver locations, is listed as dog friendly with a patio. It is at 57100 Beaver Dr., Bldg. 4, open daily 8am to 9pm, and the local brewery and pub is great for big tables and burgers. It was a stop on the Humane Society of Central Oregon's 2022 Pup Crawl, where canine companions join you on dog friendly patios.
In Bend, Worthy Brewing's Eastside beer garden has shade, water bowls and a dog menu. McKay Cottage's patio has heaters in winter and servers who bring water bowls. Those details come from a May 2023 Bend Bulletin roundup, so call ahead; dog policies change. The where to eat guide has the full list for the humans.

The six-bedroom Lodge is the main residence; the five-bedroom Cottage is the original rustic 1960s fishing and logging cabin, steps away. Two large living areas with vaulted ceilings and stone fireplaces hold the group. So do a 12-foot dining table and a wrap-around covered deck with a gas grill.

Rules that matter when you bring a dog to the Sunriver house
The home is on well and septic, so occupancy limits are enforced. The limit applies to guests (people), not to dogs. - Pets stay off the furniture and beds, you pick up after them, and they are never left unattended in the home.
- Fires are seasonal under strict county fire rules: none June through September, and May and October are weather dependent.
- Exterior security cameras cover the driveway and front door only. There are no cameras inside the home.
- Please drive slowly on Chief Paulina Drive, a shared dirt road with families and pets.
- Dock fishing is subject to seasonal regulations. Bring your own water toys and PFDs; none are provided.

Winter with the dog near Mt. Bachelor
A winter stay trades the dock for the covered hot tub, the stone fireplaces and the Cottage wood stove. Mt. Bachelor, the largest ski resort in Oregon, is about 30 minutes away. Opening day for the 2026-27 season is scheduled for December 4, 2026. In a normal year the lifts run into late May, weather permitting. The 2025-26 season opened December 23 and closed early on April 19. Wanoga Sno-Park offers snowshoeing and cross-country, with dogs on leash in the sno-park. Meissner Sno-Park's trail system is closed to dogs in winter, as are Dutchman Flat, Swampy Lakes and Vista Butte. An Oregon Sno-Park permit is required November 1 through April 30. The dog cannot stay in the house alone while you ski, so plan on the Sunriver daycare or a split shift. Snow weekends book up early; see Mt. Bachelor ski trip lodging and the winter guide.
What guests who brought dogs said
“This house gave us memories for years to come for our family 4th of July get together. It fit 25 of us comfortably. The dogs absolutely loved the yard and the river. The kids floated the river practically every day right back to the backyard. It was big enough for us to sit around and socialize in one area. The amenities were great for a big group. We'd definitely recommend and stay here again!”
“The river setting venue for this house was great! It is so private but close drive to everything in the village. We were able to put the rented kayaks in the river right from the boat dock! The house plus cabin were big enough to accommodate all our family members ( 16 adults). The pool table downstairs provided great fun during the evenings.
This will be a great memory for all our family.”
“Amazing and a must-see in person! This place is BEAUTIFUL and everything a family or group of friends needs to enjoy an extremely comfortable, welcoming, and true to Oregon experience! The landscape was gorgeous, the access to the river and dock were so fun, and the house and cottage we well equipped and clean for everyone that stayed! All of our guests couldn’t be happier, including the dogs. We can’t wait to plan our next trip back! We highly recommend this getaway for any family looking to share a special vacation together in an extremely warm, inviting and gorgeous space!”
