What the Cottage at Deschutes Riverfront Retreat is

The Cottage is the original rustic 1960s fishing and logging cabin, with five bedrooms, a wood stove, and the Deschutes River out the door. It is a two-story cabin steps from the Lodge. It stands across a grassy clearing, with a flagstone path leading toward it through the pines.

The Lodge and Cottage sit side by side on the same three acres. The property is at the end of a dead-end private road in the Three Rivers area near Sunriver. There is forest on one side and the river on the other. The Cottage is a snug retreat, with privacy and a separate living space of its own.

Can the Cottage be booked on its own?

No. The Cottage is not rented on its own. It comes as part of the full 11-bedroom estate, adding five bedrooms and a separate, cozy living space alongside the six-bedroom Lodge.

The whole estate is the Lodge and Cottage together: 11 bedrooms, 6 baths, and about 5,500 square feet. It sleeps up to 30, with a maximum of 24 adults. Book it on the Book Now page. The six-bedroom Lodge can also be booked on its own and sleeps up to 18. To book the Lodge alone, use the Lodge page.

If your group fits in six bedrooms, book the Lodge. If it needs more, book the whole estate, and the Cottage comes with it. The whole estate page lists every room in both buildings.

Where everyone sleeps in the Cottage: five bedrooms on two floors

The Cottage has five small bedrooms across two floors, with a mix of Full and Twin beds. The main floor has two bedrooms and one bath, with a Full bed and a Twin bunk. Upstairs are three bedrooms, each with a Full bed.

The Cottage beds are Full and Twin, not King or Queen. The King and Queen beds are in the Lodge, which has three King rooms, two Queen rooms, a bunk room, and five baths. Four of the 11 rooms on the estate include bunks, so plan on some sharing.

The estate has 2 pack-n-plays and 6 cots available, with no linens provided for these. The Cottage bathroom is small, with white walls, a beige tile floor, and a window.

Heating and cooling in the Cottage: the wood stove and the mini-split

The Cottage is heated by a wood-burning stove and by a mini-split that also cools. Firewood for the stove is just outside the Cottage. The mini-split is run from the remote on the wall.

The wood stove has operating instructions by the mantle. There are no candles or open flames.

High-desert evenings cool off, so opening the windows at night is often all you need. The living room has a white brick fireplace and the wood stove, large windows with a view of the trees, and colorful chairs.

What the Cottage adds to the Deschutes Riverfront Retreat estate

The Cottage adds five bedrooms and a separate living space to the six-bedroom Lodge. The Lodge alone sleeps up to 18. Together, the two buildings sleep up to 30, with a maximum of 24 adults. The Cottage is a second building with its own door, kitchen, dining room, living room, and bath.

Inside, the living room has a vaulted ceiling, a staircase, and a built-in window seat wrapping a corner of windows. A wooden coffee table and armchairs sit beside it. The kitchen has white countertops, a double sink, a white stove, small appliances, and a window view of trees. A small entryway has white paneled walls, a wooden bench, and a glass door to the outside.

For a group, that means two kitchens and two front doors on one property. The Cottage has a living room of its own, alongside the Lodge's two living areas. One family, or one set of friends, can take the Cottage and walk a few steps to the Lodge for meals at the 12-foot table. The reviews below describe how groups split between the two buildings.

The Cottage shares the estate's Deschutes River frontage and dock

The Cottage shares the estate's 450 feet of private Deschutes River frontage with the Lodge, and the river is out the door. The private dock has Adirondack chairs and a hammock. Float right from the dock, fish the Deschutes subject to seasonal regulations, watch herons and wildlife, or hand-launch a kayak or paddleboard.

Please bring your own water toys and PFDs; none are provided. The Big River boat ramp, a public put-in, is also 2.5 miles up the road. The river here is a relaxing stretch for floating, and guests also watch for eagles and otters. For more, read our guide to the Deschutes River at Sunriver.

How the Cottage works in summer and winter in Central Oregon

In summer the mini-split cools the Cottage. At night the open windows often do the rest, since high-desert evenings cool off. Under strict county fire rules, the fire pit outside is closed June through September, and May and October are weather dependent. Summer dates book far in advance.

In winter the wood stove is the center of the Cottage, and the mini-split heats as well. Firewood is just outside the door. Mt. Bachelor is about 30 minutes away, and snow weekends book up early. More on winter stays is on our Mt. Bachelor ski trip page.

Rules that apply in the Cottage

The same rules apply in the Cottage as in the Lodge. Guests must be 30 or older to rent. The home is on well and septic, so occupancy limits are enforced.

  • Inside: shoes come off, and there are no candles or open flames. The wood stove has operating instructions by the mantle.
  • Smoking: the property is non-smoking, including indoors.
  • Pets: dogs, large dogs included, are welcome for a pet fee once approved on your reservation. Keep pets off the furniture and beds, pick up after them, and do not leave them unattended in the home.
  • Quiet hours: 9:00 PM to 8:00 AM. No amplified music: no DJs, no subwoofers, no professional music setups. Live music ensembles and small Bluetooth speakers are fine. If unsure, please ask.
  • Occupancy: the full estate sleeps up to 30 guests, with a maximum of 24 adults. Do not exceed the maximum occupancy without approval.
  • Cameras: exterior security cameras cover the driveway and front door only, used solely in case of issues. There are no cameras inside the home.
  • Road: please drive slowly on Chief Paulina Drive, a shared dirt road with families and pets.

What guests said about the Cottage

“Scott was a friendly, proactive and attentive host who communicated clearly and quickly. The setting was serene and beautiful. It was the perfect place for a family reunion of all ages. We saw elk and deer as we drove down the long gravel road. Max speed is 10 MPH which is the perfect speed to really notice if there are elk are around! I really appreciated the quality beds, linens, pillows and towels. The house has many views of the Deschutes River. The dock was a favorite place for the kids. The wrap around deck had plenty of quality seating. The smaller house worked great for my sister’s family of 6 adults and one newborn baby. The main house accommodated the rest of my extended family quite nicely! Do be sure to realize that for larger families, the members need to be comfortable sharing rooms with bunk beds. The description and photos are 100% ACCURATE!”

“Beautiful property! Our group went for a ski trip so we appreciated the proximity to the mountain, and the houses amenities like the fire pit and hot tub. Kitchen was open and spacious, fully stocked with cooking gadgets making it easy to prepare meals for a big group! Plenty of comfortable sleeping spots, and very nice to have the additional quiet space of the cottage. Scott was proactive with communication and easy to work with! We would love to rent the property again in the summer to make use of the large outdoor space along the river— there’s even a frisbee golf course! Highly recommend this stay :)”

“We had a wonderful stay with extended family at Scott's place -- the house is beautiful, so well furnished and renovated, it isvery zen with high ceilings and comfortable furniture/beds. Plenty of room for large meals and games around the long dining table. We absolutely love the cabin next-door, which has several lovely rooms with large single bed rooms, with a larger bed room on the main floor, and a beautiful sitting room with windows to take in the nature and watch the river float by. In the main house, we felt so relaxed in the common area with an open kitchen/living room -- it felt spacious and great for cooking and serving food. It's a really great place for family or friend gatherings, and Scott was really helpful -- when we were looking for dry wood after a rain for a fire in the pit, he offered to reimburse us for splitters. As annual renters of large houses for family gatherings, we all agreed this place was the best. Very relaxing and private.”
