A group day in Bend from Sunriver: the Old Mill District, the Ale Trail, the river and the grocery run

Bend is 17.3 road miles and about 22 minutes from Sunriver Resort by Rome2rio, and about 30 minutes from the house. A group of 30 does it as one day: the Old Mill District and the Whitewater Park, downtown and Drake Park, the Bend Ale Trail with a designated driver, and a Costco run on the way home. This page is the plan; Sunriver vs Bend is the comparison.

Bend from Sunriver at a glance: the drive, the bus and the parking

Drive, and send as few cars as possible. Rome2rio puts Sunriver Resort to Bend at 17.3 road miles and about 22 minutes; the site states the house at about 30 minutes from Bend. Rome2rio's only bus is a Pacific Crest Buslines service to Bend's Hawthorne Station, once a day, which does not work for a group day. The estate has parking for up to 15 vehicles, so the group can stage its convoy at the house.

Bend Park and Recreation District says parking at Riverbend, Farewell Bend and Miller's Landing parks is limited, and that a new neighborhood parking permit is required. Park once, in the middle, and walk.

The Bend Whitewater Park on the Deschutes

Start at the Bend Whitewater Park, at 166 SW Shevlin Hixon Drive, in the Deschutes north of the Colorado Avenue Bridge. The park has three channels: the Fish Ladder, a float route with a bit of rapids; the Whitewater Channel in the center, with four wave features for kayakers, surfers and paddleboarders; and the Habitat Channel, a protected wildlife area with no public access. Watch from the pedestrian bridge, the east bank or McKay Park, which is where the group with no gear spends the hour.

The rules matter for a mixed group. Life jackets are required for boaters, paddleboarders and children 12 and under, whistles are required on boats and paddleboards, and swimming, diving, jumping and motorized craft are not allowed in the park. Alcohol, tobacco and marijuana are banned there. Floaters who want a calmer trip, or have children along, can exit the river and walk to McKay Park to re-enter. Hayden Homes Amphitheater is on the same street, SW Shevlin Hixon Drive.

Floating the Deschutes in Bend: the Park & Float and the $5 shuttle

The float is a summer-only plan. Bend Park and Recreation's Park & Float at 1000 SW Bradbury Way, across from The Pavilion and a block south of the Whitewater Park, offers free parking, rentals through Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe and access to the river shuttle. It is closed for summer 2026; the 2027 season is listed as mid-June through early September, weather permitting. The Ride the River shuttle costs $5 cash to the driver or through the CET app for people who bring their own tubes, and new for 2026 it carries stand-up paddleboards when there is space.

The district's parking advice for a float is the group's plan: park across from The Pavilion, split the walk into about a mile before and a mile after, and do not shuttle cars, because parking is extremely limited. Cascades East Transit ran seasonal services in Bend and Sunriver in summer 2026, through September 7, at $5 to $10 a ride: the Ride the River float shuttle, a Transit to Trails shuttle to high trailheads with a 20-bike trailer, and a Lava Butte shuttle, per OPB. Bring your own water toys and PFDs for the river at the house; none are provided there.

Downtown Bend, Drake Park and the Tower Theatre

Downtown is the walking half of the day. Drake Park covers 13 acres on Mirror Pond with nearly half a mile of riverfront, created in 1921 and renovated in 2003, and it hosts the city's Old Fashioned July 4th Celebration. The Tower Theatre at 835 Wall Street opened in 1940, was restored from 2002 and reopened in January 2004, and seats 480. Its current programming is on its own site; this page states only the building's facts.

A group of 30 does not fit one downtown table without a reservation. Split into tables of six to eight, set a meeting time at Drake Park rather than a place, and keep the one big meal for the 12-foot table back at the house.

The Bend Ale Trail for a group with a designated driver

The Bend Ale Trail is a passport across about 30 stops in seven territories, five of them in Bend, one in Redmond and one covering Sisters, Sunriver and Prineville, per Travel Oregon. Bend has more than two dozen breweries. Travel Oregon describes an updated passport launched in June 2021 that needs no paper: make an account at BendAleTrail.app and check in at each stop by GPS or the code on the trail sign. Finish a territory for a tasting glass, all seven for a taster tray, and seven of the 16 wineries, cideries and distillers for a special glass, claimed at the Visit Bend office downtown.

Designated drivers win a prize of their own for visiting any five stops, which is the right incentive for the three or four people driving a group of 30. Breweries named in Travel Oregon's trail guide include Spider City Brewing, Porter Brewing Co. and Monkless Brewing in Bend, plus Sunriver Brewing Co. Visit Bend's industry page adds that no purchase is needed to check in. The Sunriver stops and the Tap Room are covered in where to eat near Sunriver.

Hayden Homes Amphitheater: a concert night in Bend from Sunriver

Hayden Homes Amphitheater holds up to 8,000 people at 344 SW Shevlin Hixon Drive in the Old Mill District, on the Deschutes. Built in 2001, it opened with Lyle Lovett on June 26, 2002. Its summer season usually runs from Memorial Day weekend into the first week of October, and parking is free, per the venue. A concert ends late, and quiet hours at the house run 9 PM to 8 AM, so the drive back is the quiet part of the night. Chief Paulina Drive is a shared dirt road with families and pets; drive slowly on the last stretch.

Pilot Butte: the view over Bend before the drive back to Sunriver

Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint has three trails to the summit through juniper and sage, with year-round access from the east-side parking lot. The summit road is open to cars May 1 to September 30, 10 a.m. to dusk, subject to change for operations or weather, and Oregon State Parks posted a construction advisory for the summit-road gate off Highway 20 from October 7 to 30, 2026. Elevation and trail lengths are not on the park page opened for this guide.

The grocery run in Bend for 30 people: Costco and the other stores

Costco Bend is at 62207 NW Costco Drive, open to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays, 7 p.m. on Saturday and 6 p.m. on Sunday, with earlier opening for Executive members. Trader Joe's (63455 N Highway 97), Fred Meyer (61535 S Highway 97) and Whole Foods (2610 NE Highway 20) also have Bend stores per their own store pages, which carry their hours. The Sunriver Country Store, closer to the house, covers the essentials and last-minute items.

Load the cars last. The house has a well-equipped kitchen with a Vitamix, a KitchenAid mixer, a sous vide and a Breville espresso machine, a large gas grill on the covered deck, a 12-foot dining table inside and four 8-foot picnic tables outside. Occupancy limits are enforced because the home is on well and septic, so a group day in Bend is for the people on the reservation.

Designated drivers, shuttles and buses between Bend and Sunriver

There is no practical public bus for a group between Sunriver and Bend. Rome2rio lists one Pacific Crest Buslines trip a day to Hawthorne Station, and Cascades East Transit's seasonal shuttles serve the float, the trailheads and Lava Butte, not a Sunriver-to-Bend evening. For the Ale Trail, the Bend Brew Bus, owned and operated by Wanderlust Tours at 61535 S. Highway 97, phone (541) 389-8359, runs brewery and distillery tours with samples and appetizers for friends, families, bachelor and bachelorette parties and corporate groups, per Visit Central Oregon. Group-size limits and private charters are not on that page; ask the operator.

The simplest plan: three or four designated drivers from the group of 30, each working toward the Ale Trail's designated-driver prize. Arrival routes into Sunriver are in getting to Sunriver.
