The Deschutes National Forest's 2026 Stage 1 fire order was scheduled to run May 18 to November 30 unless rescinded, and the Forest Service showed no restrictions in effect on September 25. ODFW's Deschutes trout season ends September 30. At the house, the fire pit is closed June through September, and October is weather dependent under strict county fire rules.
Aspen and larch color along the Deschutes and in Central Oregon
Fall color in Central Oregon is aspen, cottonwood, vine maple, and western larch, and one named spot is on the upper Deschutes. The Deschutes Land Trust's guide names the aspen groves along the Upper Deschutes River Trail at the Slough Day Use Area, with some color at Benham Falls. In Bend, Shevlin Park is known for its larch displays, and Drake Park turns orange and gold over Mirror Pond.
Larch is the tree to drive for, and the Land Trust points to the Metolius Preserve's north trailhead for larch and scarlet vine maple. Aspens are at Indian Ford Meadow and Camp Polk Meadow, and vine maple turns red on McKenzie Pass. The guide gives no peak dates; it says only that the color arrives as summer turns to fall.
The Deschutes River Trail, the Benham Falls trailheads, and the Sun-Lava path are in things to do in Sunriver, and the longer drives to Sisters and the Metolius are in day trips from Sunriver.
Fly fishing in fall on the upper Deschutes and Fall River
September is the last full month of the upper Deschutes trout season, and Fall River above the falls is open all year. ODFW's 2026 Central Zone regulations open the Deschutes from Benham Falls up to Little Lava Lake from May 22 to September 30, two trout a day with an 8-inch minimum, and wild rainbow trout must be released. Dock fishing from the property is subject to seasonal regulations, so check the current rules for your stretch.
| Water | Season | Rules |
|---|---|---|
| Deschutes River, Benham Falls to Little Lava Lake | May 22 to September 30 | 2 trout a day, 8-inch minimum; release wild rainbow trout |
| Fall River above Fall River Falls | Open all year | Fly fishing only, barbless hooks; release wild rainbow trout |
| Fall River below Fall River Falls | May 22 to September 30 | Fly fishing only, barbless hooks; release wild rainbow trout |
An Oregon fishing license is required. Fly and Field Outfitters in Bend can outfit a group and arrange a guide. The Three Rivers area the house sits in is covered in Three Rivers, Oregon. Rules change in season, so check ODFW's weekly Central Zone recreation report before you fish.
Paulina Peak closes for the season near Sunriver
Paulina Peak is the fall drive to make before it closes. The summit is 7,984 feet, the highest point on Newberry Volcano, and on a clear day the view runs from Mt. Shasta to Mt. Adams. Driving access closed for the 2026 season on October 6, and the Forest Service says it typically closes in late October or early November, depending on snow. The road is steep, rough in places, limited to vehicles under 23 feet, and $5 per vehicle or a Northwest Forest Pass.
The Sunriver paths are for pedestrians, bicyclists, and class 1 e-bikes, with a 15 mph limit.
Fall events in Sisters and Bend, with the dates posted for 2026
One fall event had its 2026 dates posted when this page was written. The Sisters Folk Festival runs September 25 to 27, 2026, its 29th year, with more than 30 roots-music artists on seven stages around Sisters. Music starts Friday at 6 p.m. and ends Sunday at 4 p.m. Three-day passes were $245 for adults and $90 for ages 17 and under; children 5 and under are free.
Bend Magazine's 2024 festival list names the Bend Fall Festival, the BendFilm Festival, and the Sisters Harvest Faire, but the sources give no 2026 or 2027 dates for them, so check the organizers. None of the sources lists 2027 dates. Bend is about 30 minutes from the house.
First snow and Mt. Bachelor's opening date, about 30 minutes from Sunriver
The first snow usually arrives before the lifts turn. Mt. Bachelor's projected opening date for the 2026-27 season is December 4, 2026, and OnTheSnow lists it as projected, not official. October nights in Sunriver average 27.8 degrees and the record low is 8 below zero, so the Cottage's wood stove, with firewood just outside, earns its keep in late October.
Mt. Bachelor is about 30 minutes from the house, and snow weekends book up early. The winter plan, including Sno-Park permits, is in winter in Sunriver and Bend and on Mt. Bachelor ski trip lodging.
Why fall suits a retreat or a small wedding at the house near Sunriver
Fall suits a group of 12 to 30. The estate has two large living areas with vaulted ceilings and stone fireplaces, and the Cottage has a wood stove for cold nights. Corporate offsites, wellness and team retreats, milestone birthdays, and multi-family trips fit the two buildings. A 12-foot dining table doubles as a boardroom, and 200MB WiFi runs throughout. The decks and lawn give a yoga group room to practice outdoors.
Small weddings work the same way. The estate hosts intimate backyard weddings for up to 45 guests, including children, even if they are not staying overnight; the home is on a well and septic system, so the cap is firm. Four 8-foot picnic tables in a row, about 16 folding chairs, and some folding tables are on site for dinner. A $500 event fee covers the extra cleaning and garbage, in addition to the nightly rate. Every booking has a 2-night minimum, weddings and events included, and there are no day rentals.

The wedding rules are plain. No amplified music: no DJs, no subwoofers, no professional music setups. Live music ensembles and small Bluetooth speakers are fine. If unsure, please ask. No sparklers or open flame of any kind, and large rentals like dance floors need pre-approval. The full plan is on micro-weddings and Central Oregon elopement; the retreat version is on corporate retreat in Bend, Oregon.

What fall groups said
“This house was perfect for our family get together. With the amount of space indoors and outdoors, everyone could relax and enjoy their stay. My partner and I also had a small wedding ceremony in the backyard and it was perfect. My family kept saying how beautiful the home and location was that they’d want to book another stay in the future. Scott was such a great host from the moment I booked the house (~7 months in advance) until we checked out. His instructions were clear, he always responded in a timely manner, and overall he’s just an awesome host! Thanks again Scott!”
