Where the Little Deschutes rises: Mule Peak and the Mount Thielsen Wilderness

The river starts high in the Cascades, in the Mount Thielsen Wilderness of northwestern Klamath County, near Mule Peak. Wikipedia's infobox gives the source as Mule Mountain at 6,219 feet.

The upper 12 miles are the Wild and Scenic reach, designated on October 28, 1988. Crescent Creek and Big Marsh Creek, two other streams in the basin, are in the system as well. The river then roughly follows Highway 97 north, passing through Crescent and Gilchrist and past La Pine.

The confluence with the Deschutes in Three Rivers, near Sunriver

The Little Deschutes joins the Deschutes from the south inside the Three Rivers area, about 20 miles south of Bend. Three rivers meet there: the Deschutes and Little Deschutes join inside the community, and the Spring River enters the Deschutes from the west. The house sits on the Deschutes in the same community, on 450 feet of private frontage, at the end of a dead-end private road off Chief Paulina Drive.

The two rivers look different. The Deschutes through Sunriver is spring-fed and cold, Class 1 moving water in the Sunriver Chamber's rating. The Little Deschutes meanders significantly most of its course, with an average flow of 201 cubic feet per second. What the Three Rivers community is, and how the three rivers fit together, is in the Three Rivers, Oregon guide.

Reaching the Little Deschutes from the house: the Big River ramp and La Pine State Park

A public launch near the house is the Big River Boating Site, 2.5 miles up the road, which the Forest Service lists as boating access to the Deschutes River with no fee, no restroom and day use only. From Bend, the Forest Service directions are Highway 97 south about 17 miles, the Vandervert Road exit, and 5 miles on Forest Road 42. A campground sits across the road and a group campground across the river. The Forest Service page does not mention the Little Deschutes, so whether the confluence is a paddle from the ramp is a question for a local outfitter; it is not stated here.

The other public river site is La Pine State Park, on the upper Deschutes about 5 miles from La Pine. The park has year-round camping, cabins, a pet exercise area and a picnic area, and the Big Tree, a ponderosa pine nearly 162 feet tall and estimated at almost 500 years old, believed to be the largest ponderosa in the world. Rome2rio puts La Pine 16.5 miles and 25 minutes from Sunriver, and the house is about ten minutes from Sunriver Resort. The park's own page was not opened for this guide, so its fees and river-launch details are not stated here.

The Sunriver Chamber lists one outfitter for this river by name: Central Oregon Adventures, PO Box 4188, Sunriver, at 541-593-8887, for guided and unguided Deschutes River and Little Deschutes River trips with a shuttle. For a group of 12 to 30 that wants to paddle the Little Deschutes rather than find it, that is the call to make. Its own site was not opened for this guide.

Paddling the Little Deschutes: the rules for canoes and kayaks

Paddling the Little Deschutes starts with finding a launch. ODFW's management rule for the river lists providing additional public boat and bank access from Highway 58 downstream to the mouth as an objective. The rules on the water are the State Marine Board's: a Waterway Access Permit carried by the operator of each non-motorized boat, at $6 a week or $20 a calendar year plus a $1.50 portal fee, with children 13 and younger exempt.

  • A properly fitting Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket for each person on every canoe, kayak, raft or paddleboard. Children 12 and under wear theirs whenever the boat is underway.
  • A whistle or compressed air horn on each boat under 39 feet 4 inches.
  • Dress for the water temperature, not the air, and expect to get wet.
  • Leave a float plan with someone at the house; call for help if the group is overdue.
  • Never boat under the influence of alcohol, drugs, marijuana or inhalants.

No boats or PFDs are provided at the house; please bring your own water toys and PFDs. The rental shops and the Deschutes put-ins are in floating the Deschutes from Sunriver.

Fishing the Little Deschutes under ODFW's Central Zone rules

The Little Deschutes is managed for wild fish, with no hatchery trout stocked. ODFW's fish management rule for the river and its tributaries, OAR 635-500-3160, manages mountain whitefish and redband trout for natural production under the Wild Fish Management Alternative, and brown and brook trout under the Basic Yield Management Alternative. It bans hatchery trout stocking and sets out to determine whether bull trout can be restored.

The Little Deschutes does not appear among the waters with exceptions on ODFW's 2026 Central Zone page that was opened for this guide, so the zone-wide stream rules are the ones to read first: open May 22 to October 31, 2 trout per day with an 8-inch minimum and one over 20 inches, artificial flies and lures only, and bull trout angling closed. Check the printed regulations or MyODFW for the river by name before you fish; the rules change by season.

Everyone 18 and older needs an Oregon fishing license, anglers 12 to 17 need a $10 Youth License, and children under 12 need none. Buy online through MyODFW.com, at an ODFW office or from a licensed vendor. The fly shops in Sunriver are listed on the fly-fishing lodge page, with the seasons for the Deschutes, the Fall River, the Crooked and the Metolius.

Wildlife along the Little Deschutes and the Deschutes near Sunriver

Birds and otters are on the list of what guests see, and mosquitoes come with the habitat in season. At the house, the site names herons, eagles and otters on the river and trout and whitefish in it, and guests have written about elk crossing the property and elk and deer on the road in. Across the water is protected river habitat, and the native landscaping is kept on purpose to support it.

The management rule for the Little Deschutes lists improving water quality and flow for fish, screening diversions, and providing fish passage at culverts and dams among its objectives. You will see wildlife, and you may encounter mosquitoes and other insects; the county works to suppress them. Bring repellent.

What a guest said about the rivers and the road in

“Scott was a friendly, proactive and attentive host who communicated clearly and quickly. The setting was serene and beautiful. It was the perfect place for a family reunion of all ages. We saw elk and deer as we drove down the long gravel road. Max speed is 10 MPH which is the perfect speed to really notice if there are elk are around! I really appreciated the quality beds, linens, pillows and towels. The house has many views of the Deschutes River. The dock was a favorite place for the kids. The wrap around deck had plenty of quality seating. The smaller house worked great for my sister’s family of 6 adults and one newborn baby. The main house accommodated the rest of my extended family quite nicely! Do be sure to realize that for larger families, the members need to be comfortable sharing rooms with bunk beds. The description and photos are 100% ACCURATE!”
