Summer in Sunriver for a group of 12 to 30: the river, the paths, the events, and the heat

Summer in Sunriver runs June through August, with July highs averaging 84 degrees and nights near 41. The plan for a group of 12 to 30 is the river in the afternoon, the paths in the morning, and one event a week. All of it starts at an 11-bedroom estate on 450 feet of private Deschutes River frontage near Sunriver that sleeps up to 30.

Two rules shape every summer week. First, the fire pit at the house is closed June through September; there are no fires in those months. Second, the Deschutes National Forest posts public-use fire restrictions each season. In 2026 a Stage 1 order took effect May 18, scheduled through November 30 unless rescinded, and prohibited open fires on forest land outside Forest Service fire rings at designated recreation sites; the Forest Service's restrictions page showed no restrictions in effect on September 25, 2026. Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited on national forest lands under 36 CFR 261.5. Smoke is the third variable, covered below.

The Deschutes River from the dock: the summer afternoon for 30

The river is the afternoon plan, and it starts steps from the door. The estate has a private dock on 450 feet of Deschutes River frontage. Float right from the dock, fish the Deschutes subject to seasonal regulations, watch herons and wildlife, or hand-launch a kayak or paddleboard. Small boats can be hand-launched at the dock, and the Big River boat ramp, a public put-in, is 2.5 miles up the road.

Bring your own water toys and PFDs; none are provided. For a group of 30 that means a trailer of tubes and kayaks, or a rental run to the Village. The dock has Adirondack chairs, and a hammock hangs between pines by the water. The float distances, the outfitters, and the life-jacket law are in the Deschutes River at Sunriver.

The ODFW rules for 2026 open the Deschutes from Benham Falls up to Little Lava Lake from May 22 to September 30, two trout a day, with wild rainbow trout released. Dock fishing from the property is subject to seasonal regulations, so check the current rules first.

SHARC in Sunriver: a summer staple ten minutes from the house

Sunriver Resort and SHARC are both about ten minutes from the house. For the part of the group that did not bring tubes, check outfitter rental details and current season dates before you promise 30 people a float; the stretch-by-stretch float table is in the Deschutes River at Sunriver.

SHARC is the other summer staple in Sunriver. SHARC passes are not included with the house. Check availability for public use directly with the SHARC facility, and confirm hours and day-pass prices there, not with a listing. The rest of Sunriver's year is in things to do in Sunriver; this page covers only the summer months.

Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway and the Sunriver bike paths: the summer mornings

Mornings are for the paths and the lakes, before the heat. The Sunriver Owners Association reserves the Sunriver paths for pedestrians, bicyclists, class 1 e-bikes, and ADA transportation. Class 2 and 3 e-bikes, hoverboards, and one-wheels are prohibited, and the pathway speed limit is 15 mph. The road speed limit in Sunriver is 25 mph unless posted lower. The path mileage, rental shops, and the Sun-Lava path to Lava Lands are in things to do in Sunriver.

The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway is the summer drive. It runs past Mt. Bachelor to Sparks, Elk, and Hosmer lakes, and its route listing shows it closed December to March. From the house, Mt. Bachelor is about 30 minutes, so the lakes are a morning out and an afternoon back at the dock. The distances, the lake-by-lake notes, and the per-vehicle fees are in day trips from Sunriver.

Wildfire smoke and fire restrictions around Sunriver in summer

Smoke is the one summer variable you cannot plan around, so plan to check it. The Oregon Smoke Blog at oregonsmoke.org is managed by Oregon DEQ with the Oregon Department of Forestry, the Oregon Health Authority, the Forest Service, and the National Weather Service. It posts air-quality advisories by county and daily smoke outlooks, and it links the DEQ Air Quality Index and the OregonAIR app. In September 2024 it carried several advisories for Deschutes County. Check it the week before and the morning of a river day.

The Deschutes National Forest's public-use fire restrictions page lists the current stage and dates. Under 2026 Stage 1, open fires were prohibited on forest land except in Forest Service fire rings at designated recreation sites, smoking was prohibited except in enclosed vehicles or buildings, developed recreation sites, waterways, and cleared areas at least 3 feet in diameter, and chainsaws were barred from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Fireworks are prohibited on national forest lands under 36 CFR 261.5. The Central Oregon fire information line is 1-800-523-4737.

At the house, the rules are simpler. The fire pit is closed June through September. There are no candles or open flames. Smoking is not allowed. The gas grill on the covered deck is the summer cooking fire, and it is the only one.

Outdoor meals at the four picnic tables on the Deschutes

Dinner for 30 in summer happens outside, at four 8-foot picnic tables set in a row. That is 32 feet of table. Add the 12-foot dining table inside, the wrap-around covered deck with a dining set, and about 16 folding chairs with some folding tables.

The grill is a large gas grill on the deck. The kitchen has a Breville espresso machine, a Vitamix, a KitchenAid mixer, and a sous vide. The grocery run for 30 is in Bend, about 30 minutes away: Costco, Trader Joe's, Fred Meyer, Whole Foods, WinCo, and Newport Avenue Market. The Sunriver Country Store, closer in, covers the essentials. The restaurants for the nights you do not cook are in where to eat near Sunriver; make reservations for larger groups on summer weekends.

The nights are cold, even in July. The Cottage has a wood stove and a mini-split that heats and cools, and its page notes that high-desert evenings cool off, so opening the windows at night is often all you need. The covered hot tub on the deck is the place for the 41-degree night.

A summer week in Sunriver for 30, day by day

A good summer week has one driving day, one event, and four river afternoons. Check-in is after 4 PM and check-out is before 11 AM, so arrival day is the grocery run and the first swim.

The 6-hole disc golf course, bocce, yard games, outdoor ping pong, and the hammock fill the hours between. Quiet hours run 9 PM to 8 AM, and the stars after that are the subject of the stargazing guide; Sunriver next door is a Dark Sky Place, as Three Rivers, Oregon explains.

Where to stay near Sunriver for a summer week with a large group

Stay at Deschutes Riverfront Retreat, an 11-bedroom, 6-bath estate in the Three Rivers area near Sunriver that sleeps up to 30, with a maximum of 24 adults. It has 450 feet of private Deschutes River frontage, a private dock, a covered hot tub, a 6-hole disc golf course, and parking for up to 15 vehicles, with room for vans and trailers. It is about ten minutes from Sunriver Resort and SHARC and about 30 minutes from Bend and Mt. Bachelor.

The six-bedroom Lodge sleeps up to 18 and can be booked on its own; the five-bedroom Cottage comes only with the full estate. Both sit side by side on three acres at the end of a dead-end private road, with 80 acres of trees on one side and protected river habitat across the water. The renter must be 30 or older, every booking has a 2-night minimum, and there are no day rentals. Occupancy limits are enforced because the home is on well and septic.
