Youth group retreat lodging near Sunriver: one riverfront house for 12 to 30, with the chaperones under the same roof

A youth group retreat needs a place where 20 teenagers can be loud until 9 PM, sleep in bunks, and be counted at breakfast. This house near Sunriver sleeps 30 in 11 bedrooms across two buildings, with a game room, a 12-foot table, three private acres and 450 feet of Deschutes River frontage, about 30 minutes from Bend. A youth leadership institute and a softball team have stayed here.

Which youth groups stay near Sunriver, and what they need from the house

Church youth groups on a winter or summer retreat. School leadership programs that come to Central Oregon for a week in August. Scout troops and Venturing crews between the river and Newberry. Club teams on a training weekend. What they share is a ratio: two or three adults for every ten kids, one adult who signs and is responsible, and a schedule with a quiet time in it.

What they need from the house is sleeping that keeps boys, girls and adults in separate rooms with doors; a kitchen that does breakfast for 30 at once; a big room for the evening session; and outside space that does not require a van. All four are here.

Where a youth group sleeps: bunk rooms, separate buildings, adults near the doors

The Lodge has six bedrooms on two floors: three Kings, two Queens and a bunk room with two sets of twin bunks, with twin bunks added to two of the King rooms, across five baths. The Cottage, the original 1960s cabin next door, has five bedrooms with four Full beds and a Twin bunk, one bath, its own kitchen and its own front door. The usual plan is one gender in the Cottage with a chaperone, the other downstairs in the Lodge with a chaperone, and the leaders in the main-floor Kings by the front door. The bed-by-bed table for all 11 rooms is on large group rentals near Sunriver; the floor plans and 3D tour are on the whole retreat page.

The evening session and the free time: two living areas, the game room and three acres on the Deschutes

Two living areas with stone fireplaces, one upstairs and one down, mean the session happens in one and the card game in the other. The game room has a pool table, ping pong, an arcade cabinet and an Xbox. Outside are a private 6-hole disc golf course, bocce, outdoor ping pong, a seasonal fire pit by the river and the dock with Adirondack chairs. The group photo is the one on the dock at sunset.

The river is cold, fast and unfenced. Life jackets on before the dock, an adult assigned to the water, and the rules in Deschutes River safety for groups read aloud on arrival. Floating is a day with a shuttle, in floating the Deschutes from Sunriver.

Feeding 30 teenagers near Sunriver: the kitchen, the grill and the grocery run in Bend

The main kitchen has a large butcher-block island, double appliances, a 12-foot table for twelve and four 8-foot picnic tables on the covered deck; the Cottage kitchen does the second shift. The gas grill feeds the group. A rota by meal, posted on the fridge, is how to feed 30 here without one adult cooking all weekend; the shopping list is in feeding 30 people near Sunriver.

Days out from the house: Bend, Newberry, Mt. Bachelor and the High Desert Museum

Bend is 30 minutes for the Old Mill and Riverbend Park; the High Desert Museum is on the way. Newberry National Volcanic Monument, with Lava River Cave and the Big Obsidian Flow, is a half day the other direction. Mt. Bachelor is 30 minutes for skiing in winter and the bike park in summer. From the house: Sunriver Resort and SHARC are five miles and about ten minutes, Bend and Mt. Bachelor are each about 30 minutes, and the Big River boat ramp, a public put-in, is 2.5 miles up the road.

Parking for up to 15 vehicles takes the church vans; the last stretch is Chief Paulina Drive, a shared dirt road, at 10 MPH. Things to do in Sunriver has the rest.

What a youth program and a retreat group said

“We were in the area for a youth leadership training institute. This beautiful home was the perfect location for our group of student leaders. There was plenty of room for everyone and fun activities available for the youth in between sessions. Being able to stay in one location, sharing meals and cleanup duties together created a much more cohesive and bonded group than if we had placed the students in hotel rooms.”
