Fall River at a glance, from Sunriver

Fall River is the spring-fed stream in the pines southwest of Sunriver, and it is serious trout water. Wikipedia puts its length at about 12 miles, its source at a spring about 2 miles northwest of Pringle Falls at 4,274 feet, and its mouth on the Deschutes just downstream from La Pine State Park at 4,175 feet. Fall River Falls, a 14-foot step waterfall, is inside the state park. Indian Creek, the only named tributary, joins above the hatchery.

The Forest Service directions from Sunriver are the ones to use: drive west through the roundabout, turn left on Century Drive, go south about 3 miles to South Century Drive, County Road 42, turn right and follow it about 10 miles west with the river on the left. The trailhead has no fee, the campground charges overnight rates, and the guard station is $90 a night. The pages opened for this guide give no drive time from the house, so plan on those road miles from Sunriver plus the ten minutes from the house to the resort.

Fall River fishing rules: fly only, barbless, all year above the falls

Fall River is fly fishing only, barbless hooks required, and wild rainbow trout must be released, under Oregon's Central Zone regulations. Above Fall River Falls the river is open all year. Below the falls it is open May 22 to September 30. The entry lists no special bag limit, so the general Central Zone stream limit applies: 2 trout a day, 3 daily limits in possession. An Oregon fishing license is required, and the rules change, so check the current regulations before the trip.

The Forest Service says the river holds naturally reproducing brook, brown and rainbow trout, that legal-size brook and rainbow are stocked several times a year, and that native whitefish live below the falls. Visit Central Oregon adds that Fall River is a major source of brown trout for the Deschutes and winter habitat for many species. A guide and gear come from Fly and Field Outfitters in Bend; the river at the house is covered on the Deschutes River at Sunriver.

Why Fall River suits beginners and a mixed group from Sunriver

Fall River suits a mixed group because the water is spring-fed and runs through rolling pine forest, and the non-anglers have a trail, a campground and a hatchery. The all-year season above the falls means a January trip is possible. The Forest Service says legal-size brook and rainbow trout are stocked several times a year.

The rules are the other reason. Fly only and barbless means the group fishes one way, with one set of gear to rent, and released wild rainbows mean nobody has to argue about the cooler. The hatchery is the family half of the day: fish in the raceways, birds of prey and waterfowl overhead, and an easy stop for the grandparents and the children who are done after an hour.

Fall River Fish Hatchery: visiting hours and what is raised

Fall River Hatchery is open to visitors 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, at 15055 S. Century Drive, and ODFW says May through September is the best time to visit. The hatchery raises legal and trophy-sized rainbow trout, provides rainbow, brook and cutthroat trout fingerlings for the statewide air-stocking program, and traps and spawns brown trout at a remote site. The original hatchery was finished in 1929 and the ten raceways in 1952.

Visitor facilities are, in ODFW's words, very limited, but the page says the stop is worth making. It lists a camp host, a campground and fishing on site, and wildlife from birds of prey to wading birds and waterfowl. ODFW's directions from Highway 97: take the Fall River exit just past milepost 155, go west one mile to the T, turn left one mile, turn right onto S. Century Drive at the Thousand Trails sign, and continue six miles to the entrance on the south side past milepost 12. The phone is (541) 593-1510.

Fall River Falls and the Fall River Trail

Fall River Falls is a 14-foot step waterfall with a 75-foot-wide lip and a plunge pool 100 feet wide, in La Pine State Park near the river's mouth. Oregon Hikers reaches it on the Deschutes-Fall River Loop, 7.9 miles with 225 feet of gain from the McGregor Viewpoint Trailhead, open all year and family-friendly in shorter sections. Dogs are allowed on leash, and the trails are shared with bikes and horses. The park side of that day is on La Pine State Park.

Upstream, the Forest Service's Fall River Trail follows the river from Fall River Campground to the Fall River Trailhead, a small lot at the trail's eastern end with no fee, no restrooms and no water. From Bend the trailhead is 17.3 miles south on Highway 97 and 10.2 miles southwest on County Road 42; the campground is 2 miles farther. The Forest Service pages do not state the trail's length.

Fall River Campground and the Fall River Guard Station

Fall River Campground sits beside the river, with vault toilets, no drinking water and a 40-foot limit on site length. Its 2026 season was tentatively May 8 to October 18, with reservations on Recreation.gov until September 17 and first-come, first-served after that. The Forest Service page lists two rates, $14 and $21 a night for a single site, so confirm the current one. Non-motorized boating, fishing and day hiking are the listed uses.

The Fall River Guard Station is the Civilian Conservation Corps cabin at the headwaters, built in the 1930s as a fire outpost. It is a small two-bedroom cabin with a full bed, a twin and a two-person futon, for a maximum of five people, at $90 per night. Heat, lights, the refrigerator and the stove run on propane; there is no drinking water and a vault toilet outside. Reserve at least three days ahead on Recreation.gov, for up to seven nights. Pets are allowed outside only. A group of 30 cannot stay there, but two anglers who want to be on the water at first light can.

The drive from the house to Fall River via South Century Drive

From the house, the route is Sunriver, then Century Drive, then South Century Drive west. The Forest Service directions start at the Sunriver exit: west through the roundabout, left on Century Drive, about 3 miles south to South Century Drive, then about 10 miles west to the river. The guard station page puts its cabin about 11 miles along South Century Drive, on the left and hard to see until you are close. The hatchery entrance is past milepost 12.

The house is about ten minutes from Sunriver Resort. Drive slowly on Chief Paulina Drive, a shared dirt road with families and pets, on the way out. Arrival routes to the area are on getting to Sunriver.

A Fall River day for a group of 12 to 30 from the house near Sunriver

Split the group in two at breakfast. The anglers leave early with rented fly gear and spread out along the upper river, where the season never closes. The rest leave mid-morning for the hatchery and a stretch of the Fall River Trail, then meet the anglers for lunch from the cooler. The trailhead charges nothing.

Back at the house, the mudroom with its built-in bench and coat hooks takes the waders, and the rinse happens outside. Anyone who did not want the drive fishes the Deschutes from the private dock on 450 feet of frontage, subject to seasonal regulations. Dinner is on the 12-foot dining table or the four 8-foot picnic tables, and the covered hot tub closes the day. The house has parking for up to 15 vehicles, so two or three cars carry the fishing party and the rest stay put.

Where to eat near Fall River

What groups said about the river and the house

“This house gave us memories for years to come for our family 4th of July get together. It fit 25 of us comfortably. The dogs absolutely loved the yard and the river. The kids floated the river practically every day right back to the backyard. It was big enough for us to sit around and socialize in one area. The amenities were great for a big group. We'd definitely recommend and stay here again!”
