Where Three Rivers, Oregon is: between Sunriver and La Pine, west of Highway 97

Three Rivers is in south-central Deschutes County, south of Sunriver and north of La Pine, just west of U.S. Route 97. It had 3,925 people at the 2020 census. The name is the geography: the Deschutes, the Little Deschutes and the Spring River meet here, and the property sits on the Deschutes itself. The full picture of the area is in the Three Rivers guide.

For a renter the difference from Sunriver is lot size and quiet. Sunriver is a planned resort community on quarter-acre lots with paved bike paths and a village; Three Rivers is rivers, pines and acreage, with no main street. The house is at the end of a dead-end private road with 80 acres of trees on one side and protected river habitat across the water.

Three Rivers vs Sunriver vs La Pine for a vacation rental

Stay in Sunriver for walkability and resort amenities, in La Pine for the lowest rates and La Pine State Park, and in Three Rivers for a riverfront house with acreage that a group can fill. Three Rivers has no restaurants or shops of its own; the Sunriver Country Store at 57100 Beaver Drive, about ten minutes away, is the closest grocery, and the big run is Bend.

  • Sunriver: condos and houses inside the resort community, bike paths, SHARC (passes not included here), ten minutes north.
  • La Pine: smaller riverfront cabins on the Little Deschutes and La Pine State Park, covered in the La Pine guide.
  • Three Rivers: this house, 11 bedrooms on 450 feet of the Deschutes, for 12 to 30 people.

The Three Rivers house: 11 bedrooms in the Lodge and the Cottage

Six bedrooms are in the Lodge, the main residence, and five in the Cottage, the original 1960s fishing and logging cabin steps away. The Lodge has three King rooms, two Queen rooms and a bunk room with five baths; the Cottage has four Full beds and a Twin bunk with one bath. The bed-by-bed table and 3D tours are on the whole property page.

The Lodge sleeps up to 18 and books on its own with at least 4 guests. The Cottage comes only as part of the full property. Four of the 11 rooms include bunks, so plan on some sharing; the Lodge also has a futon and a small twin sofa bed by the pool table, plus 2 pack-n-plays and 6 cots with no linens provided.

The river at the Three Rivers house: 450 feet of frontage and a dock

The dock has Adirondack chairs and a hammock between the pines, and small boats hand-launch from it. The Big River boat ramp, a public put-in, is 2.5 miles up the road, and the water below Sunriver is flat and non-motorized. The river day is on the Deschutes River vacation rental page, and the float in floating the Deschutes from Sunriver.

Where 30 people gather: two living areas, a 12-foot table, the deck and the disc golf course

Two living areas with stone fireplaces, a 12-foot dining table with folding tables for the rest, a game room with a pool table, ping pong, an arcade and an Xbox, and a wrap-around covered deck with a gas grill and four 8-foot picnic tables. Outside: a covered hot tub, a seasonal fire pit by the river, private 6-hole disc golf, bocce and yard games on the three acres.

Expect dark skies: Sunriver next door was named a Dark Sky Friendly Development of Distinction in 2020, and stargazing near Sunriver covers where to look.

What guests said about the quiet side of Sunriver

“Our family enjoyed the house very much. It was at a dead endstreet, so was really quiet. If we had questions, Scott was available and responded pretty quickly. There was plenty of things for our grandkids to do. Would go again.”
