Deschutes River vacation rental

A Deschutes River vacation rental with 450 feet of private frontage and your own dock

Deschutes Riverfront Retreat sits on 450 feet of private Deschutes River frontage near Sunriver, Oregon, with its own dock, on a reach designated Wild and Scenic. The property sleeps up to 30 (maximum 24 adults) across 11 bedrooms on three acres. Most riverfront rentals on the Deschutes have 100 to 200 feet of bank and 3 or 4 bedrooms; this one is built for a group of 30.

What 450 feet of Deschutes River frontage gives a group that 100 feet does not

Four hundred and fifty feet of bank means the dock, the fire pit, the hammock and the lawn are all on the water at once, and 30 people spread along the river without crowding one landing. The property is three acres on a bend of the Deschutes, with protected river habitat across the water and 80 acres of trees on one side, at the end of a dead-end private road.

The dock has Adirondack chairs and a hammock between the pines. Small boats hand-launch from it. The seasonal fire pit is down by the river, and the covered hot tub sits on the flagstone patio below the deck with the water in view. The property is on a reach of the Deschutes that is a federally designated Wild and Scenic River, which is why there is nothing across the water.

Floating the Deschutes from the dock: the put-ins, the takeout and what to bring

Groups float from the dock. The Big River boat ramp, a public put-in, is 2.5 miles up the road, and the stretch below Sunriver is flat water where only non-motorized boats are allowed. Bring your own tubes, kayaks, paddleboards and PFDs; none are provided. Oregon requires one wearable life jacket on board per person, and children 12 and under must wear one.

The float itself, the shuttle back and the landings are laid out in floating the Deschutes from Sunriver. The river is cold and the current is real even where it looks slow; Deschutes River safety for groups is the page to read before a reunion with kids. The Sunriver Resort marina rents canoes, kayaks and paddleboards to the public in season, covered in Sunriver Resort for renters.

Fishing the Deschutes from a riverfront rental: dock fishing, Fall River and the guides

Dock fishing is subject to seasonal regulations; check the current rules before you cast. The Upper Deschutes, Fall River and the Little Deschutes are all within a short drive, and the fly shops in Sunriver and Bend run guided walk-and-wade and float trips. The house as a base for an angling group is on the fly fishing lodge near Sunriver page, and the rivers themselves on Fall River and the Little Deschutes.

Wildlife on this stretch of the Deschutes

Elk, deer, otters, eagles and ducks are regular on the property; guests report a herd of elk crossing the grounds and elk and deer on the gravel road in. The trade for that is mosquitoes in early summer along the river. The guest-reported elk sightings are quoted in full on the reviews page.

The property is not fenced and the bank is open, so the wildlife comes to the water as it always has. Please drive slowly on Chief Paulina Drive, a shared dirt road with families, pets and the occasional elk on it. Night skies are dark here; Sunriver next door was named a Dark Sky Friendly Development of Distinction in 2020, and stargazing near Sunriver says where to look.

The house behind the river: 11 bedrooms, two living areas, one table

Eleven bedrooms hold the group across the six-bedroom Lodge and the five-bedroom Cottage, with 6 baths in all. Two living areas with stone fireplaces, a 12-foot table, a game room with a pool table and ping pong, and a wrap-around covered deck with a gas grill and four 8-foot picnic tables face the water. The bed-by-bed table and 3D tours are on the whole property page.

The Lodge sleeps up to 18 and books on its own with at least 4 guests. The Cottage comes only as part of the full property. Both sit side by side on the same three acres, steps from the dock.

A river weekend on the Deschutes near Sunriver, hour by hour

Friday: the grocery run in Bend on the way in, check-in after 4 PM, dinner at the long table, the hot tub. Sunday: breakfast on the deck, a last hour on the dock, checkout before 11 AM.

Fires are seasonal: none June through September, and May and October are weather dependent. The longer version is in the 3-day Sunriver plan for large groups.
